Our History
Ensamble Vocal Cámara XXI was founded in 2006 by Maestro Miguel Ángel Pesce with the purpose of performing works from the universal choral repertoire.
In August 2013, the ensemble was selected to perform at the 7th Competition for Choral Interpretation of South American Folk and Popular Music, held in La Plata, Buenos Aires, and organized by the Argentine Association for Choral Music "América Cantat" (AAMCANT). There, it was awarded the Gold Medal.
That same September, Cámara XXI performed at the Teatro Colón alongside the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, interpreting H. Villa-Lobos's A Floresta do Amazonas. One month later, the male voices of the ensemble were invited back to the Teatro Colón to perform Ralph Vaughan Williams's Flos Campi, conducted by Maestro Carlos Bertazza. In November, the ensemble participated in the Chamber Music Series at the Usina del Arte.
In December, Cámara XXI was invited by Argentina's Secretariat of Culture to perform as part of the Voces Siglo XXI concert series, premiering contemporary works by Argentine and Latin American composers.
In March 2014, the ensemble was selected for the Fourth Edition of the Nuevas Músicas por la Memoria Festival — dedicated to contemporary Argentine music — at the Espacio Cultural Nuestros Hijos, where it performed Mauricio Kagel's Rrrrrrr… In April, it appeared at the Teatro Colón alongside the Coro Lagun Onak in a performance of Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem, conducted by Maestro Enrique Arturo Diemecke.
In August 2014, Cámara XXI competed at ANSILTA, the Choral Competition and Festival held in San Juan, Argentina, organized by the Asociación Coro de Cámara Arturo Beruti, where it received the 2nd Prize Arturo Beruti.
Throughout 2014, the ensemble also participated in the Contemporary Music Series at the Teatro Cervantes, the Kagel symposium Todo aquello que no es ópera organized by the Centro de Arte Experimental of the Universidad Nacional de San Martín, and the Biblioteca Contemporánea series at the Biblioteca Nacional.
2016 brought new challenges. The ensemble was invited to perform selected scenes from Johann Strauss's operetta Die Fledermaus, alongside the Choir of the Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón and the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Roberto Paternostro. In June, it was engaged by the CETC (Teatro Colón's Centre for Experimental Performance) to take part in a performance within the Festival Nueva Ópera de Buenos Aires, held across several spaces of the Teatro Colón in August.
In October of that year, Cámara XXI gave the world premiere of The Great Learning by British composer Cornelius Cardew, as part of the Contemporary Music Series at the Centro Nacional de la Música. In November, it performed in a production of Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges at the Teatro Colón and, in partnership with the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), premiered a series of new choral works from the Composition Department.
In April 2017, the ensemble participated in the CETC's Festivales Integrales series, performing in a monographic concert dedicated to Argentine composer Jorge Horst.
In November 2017, Cámara XXI traveled to Spain to compete at the Certamen Internacional de Coros de Tolosa, in the Basque Country — one of the oldest and most demanding choral competitions in the world. The ensemble was awarded 3rd Place in the Folk Category.
In 2018, Cámara XXI served as ensemble-in-residence at the CETC (Teatro Colón) for the contemporary opera 68, composed by Nicolás Varchausky and directed by Matías Feldman and Marcelo Brodsky. In 2019, the ensemble performed at the Usina del Arte and in the Intérpretes Argentinos series at the Teatro Colón.
In 2022, together with composer Agustina Crespo, the ensemble produced the choral album Puente Contemporáneo, with support from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes. That same year, it received a Mecenazgo grant from the City of Buenos Aires for the creation of an original repertoire for bandoneón and choir.
In June 2023, Cámara XXI competed at the San Juan Canta International Choral Competition in Argentina, winning First Prize in both categories — Universal Choral Repertoire and Popular Choral Music — as well as a Special Mention for its interpretation of Gesualdo's madrigal Occhi del mio cor vita.
Later that year, the ensemble performed Honegger's Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra at the Teatro Colón, under the baton of Maestro Charles Dutoit. In 2024, it returned to the Teatro Colón's main hall with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, this time under Maestro Elías Grandy, to perform works by Brahms.
